How Does CBD Muscle Rub Work?
As you look for effective ways to soothe and synergize your body you may be considering hemp-derived CBD. An increasing number of athletes, fitness buffs, and those looking to manage their chronic or acute pain are exploring natural alternatives. While CBD oil can be applied topically, a CBD joint and muscle rub is easier to apply than oil. Here’s what you need to know.
Please Note—CBD companies cannot provide medical advice and we cannot guarantee that CBD will effectively soothe your mind or body. The data we provide is for informational purposes. Consult with your physician for guidance on all topical products and dietary supplements.
Is CBD Legal?
Yes, as of the Farm Bill of 2018, industrial hemp with .3 percent or less of the intoxicating compound THC is legal to buy, sell, possess, and use in all 50 states. Products that contain more than .3 percent THC are classified as marijuana and vary in legality from one state to the next.
However, CBD and marijuana are both derived from different strains of the cannabis plant, of which there are over 700 strains. Currently, the federal government doesn’t distinguish between hemp and marijuana, so both are classified as a Schedule I Drug. This means that employers, schools, and extracurricular activities can prohibit use. So, ensure you understand the drug policies you have agreed to before you begin using hemp-derived CBD. The consequences of use or possession that violate the drug policies that you’ve agreed to span the range of being suspended, terminated, or expelled.
What Does CBD Do To Muscles?
CBD is the active compound responsible for the medicinal benefits of CBD, not the THC. So, CBD delivers the benefits of marijuana without the high.

Why Use A Rub Instead Of An Oil Or Oral Product?
Many of our clients use a combination of oral and topical products to personalize their wellness routines. Oral products will soothe and synergize your body the same way that a rub does. However, choosing a topical product allows you to hyper-target muscles and joints. Topicals also kick in within 10 to 20 minutes, while oral products can take up to 30 to 40 minutes to kick in—up to 60 minutes if consumed with or in food and beverages.
CBD oil tincture can be applied topically, but many of our clients prefer a cream. While they both deliver the same results, CBD cream absorbs quickly into the skin, while oil does not absorb completely—and can stain your clothing. So, a rub is simply more convenient. However, an oil tincture is more versatile as you can use it to cook, bake, take it orally, apply it topically, mix it into skincare and beauty products, give it to your pets, and more!
Does CBD Muscle Rub Work?
The only way to determine if CBD works for you is to give it a try. Your physician can help you determine how often to use CBD for muscle pain, joint pain, or to soothe your body. Some of our clients experience rapid and same-day relief, while others must use CBD with consistency to experience its benefits.
Like anything, CBD may not work for you. Or it may be a small part of your personalized wellness routine. For example, some of our clients use it daily while others only use it after strenuous physical activity or during a flare up in inflammation.
Does CBD Really Do Anything?
If you’ve tried CBD in the past and it didn’t seem to do anything, there could be a few reasons why:
You weren’t using CBD—many hemp seed oil products try to pass for hemp-derived CBD. However, hemp seed oil is a cooking oil and seeds contain only trace amounts of CBD. Trace amounts are not enough for an effective or measurable number of milligrams.
Your product was watered down—the CBD industry is young and highly unregulated. To increase their profits, many CBD brands water down their products with additives and fillers. Or they contain low milligrams per serving. So, be sure to read the label in search of a pure product and a clearly defined number of milligrams per serving.
You weren’t consistent—whether oral or topical, you’ll need to find the number of milligrams per serving that work best for you, as well as how many servings or applications per day. With topical products, you apply a concentrated amount of CBD directly to the areas you want to target.
How To Shop For The Best CBD Muscle Rub
We mentioned a few factors for how to identify the best CBD muscle rub and oral products above. In addition to ensuring you are using CBD and not hemp seed oil, verifying product purity, verifying milligrams, and using products consistently, you should also:
- Choose a USDA-Certified Organic product
- Choose a full-spectrum or broad spectrum CBD
- Ensure the product is third-party lab tested
- Choose a brand that provides online access to lab tests
- Choose a brand with a versatile range of products
Holmes Organics is a premium brand that meets these criteria and more!
How To Make A Homemade CBD Muscle Rub
If you have CBD oil at home, but don’t love applying it topically, you can mix or shake it into any of your skincare and beauty products. This includes adding it to a body or hand lotion to create a homemade CBD muscle rub.
You can dispense the amount of lotion you want to use, then mix a few drops of CBD oil in. Or you can mix it into the entire lotion bottle or jar. There are a few things you must be mindful of when mixing CBD oil into a full bottle or jar:
- If your lotion bottle or jar is clear the exposure to light may degrade the CBD.
- Ensuring a consistent potency of CBD can be tricky if it’s not well mixed.
- When not labeled as a CBD product you may forget that your lotion contains cannabis, which is of particular concern when traveling—which we discuss more below.
Can I Travel With CBD Cream?
Although legal in all 50 states and in many countries, the laws regarding traveling with cannabis products continue to have a lot of grey area. Traveling with CBD products across state lines can be tricky and traveling by plane is not suggested. Even if you are traveling to a state or country where either or both CBD and marijuana are legal, customs may have restrictions. It’s always better safe than sorry so leave your CBD at home, have it shipped to your out-of-state location, or purchase it when you arrive at your destination—leaving it behind on your return drive or flight. Find out more on traveling with CBD in this blog post.
Can I Use CBD At Work?
If CBD works for you, you may want to bring your rub and oral products with you to work, school, or the gym. That way you can use it any time the need arises. But before you pop it in your purse, laptop bag, or gym bag—ensure you understand what the CBD policies are for each place you are visiting.
For example, many schools do not allow CBD on campus. Employers can prohibit use as CBD is still classified on the Federal level as a Schedule I Drug. Employers who allow at-home CBD use, may not allow products to be brought to work. Or you can’t remove them from your vehicle.
Don’t forget to remove your CBD products from your bag or purse if you’ve used them on the weekend or after-hours.
